Dedekind's Structuralism: An Interpretation and Partial Defense
Various contributors to recent philosophy of mathematics have taken Richard Dedekind to be the founder of structuralism in mathematics. In this paper I examine whether Dedekind did, in fact, hold structuralist views and, insofar as that is the case, how they relate to the main contemporary variants. In addition, I argue that his writings contain philosophical insights that are worth reexamining...
متن کاملAn “anti-hasse Principle” for Prime Twists
Given an algebraic curve C/Q having points everywhere locally and endowed with a suitable involution, we show that there exists a positive density family of prime quadratic twists of C violating the Hasse principle. The result applies in particular to wN -Atkin-Lehner twists of most modular curves X0(N) and to wp-Atkin-Lehner twists of certain Shimura curves XD+.
متن کاملPartial separation of an oxytocic principle from preparations of angiotonin.
A THE name implies, angiotonin is characterized by its action on vascular smooth muscle. This activity is usually assayed from its pressor effect in intact animals. Preparations of angiotonin have also been observed to cause contraction of nonvascular smooth muscle and, on this basis, the pressor activity of angiotonin has been attributed to a direct myotropic action of a single substance' ; th...
متن کاملA Non-factualist defense of the Reflection principle
Are there plausible synchronic constraints on how a subject thinks of herself extended over time? At first glance, Bas van Fraassen’s principle of Reflection seems to prescribe the sort of epistemic authority one’s future self should be taken by one to have over one’s current epistemic states.
